Arline Ferrão, a Mozambican entrepreneur building a green alternative to disposable bags

June 30, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Arline Ferrão, founder and managing partner, Kasunga (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Arline Ferrão is the founder and managing partner of Kasunga, a 100% Mozambican company and brand, committed to sustainability, offering personalized reusable bags and bags, produced with exceptional care, combining environmentally friendly materials and traditional African fabrics. Well-being and sustainability, in its environmental, social and human components, are at the center of its actions on different fronts. In addition to Kasunga, Arline is a psychologist focused on the area of mental health and well-being at work.

LoA spoke to founder Arline Ferrão about her business ethos and her commitment to sustainability.

What does your company do?

We produce reusable bags and bags, as sustainable alternatives to disposable plastic bags. We have items for purchases and deliveries, events and celebrations, organization and cleaning, casual use, among other purposes.

“Our purpose is to help people follow their journeys with a clear conscience and leave a legacy that future generations will be proud to remember and reproduce. Our products are created with this in mind.”

What inspired you to start your company?

A combination of discomfort with the pollution situation experienced in our cities and seen in other parts of the world, and the desire to create a company associated with a cause that I believe in - environmental protection. Associated with this, my father's provocation, who invited me to follow a report that talked about pollution and showed a beach (in some corner of the world) infested with trash, where single-use plastic was a significant part. From then on, it made sense to me that the company to be created would bring solutions to this problem and, through the brand, promote causes such as environmental protection and female and community empowerment.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Our purpose is to help people follow their journeys with a clear conscience and leave a legacy that future generations will be proud to remember and reproduce. Our products are created with this in mind, which is why they are made from sustainable materials, produced locally, by locals, with a focus on practicality, without neglecting an appealing design. We provide solutions that people feel proud to use and showcase.

Tell us a little about your team:

We are a team of 4 young people (3 women and 1 man), from different areas of training and very committed to the mission of expanding and reinforcing the use of reusable bags and bags in Mozambique and beyond its borders.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Before Kasunga, what I had was experience in producing and selling handmade candles and jewelry, which I acquired in my childhood, which I had with my sister and two friends. Although this activity already involved creativity and manual skills, it was certainly not done from a business perspective and as a company, as is the case with Kasunga. My studies were also not related to management, so a lot of things were new.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

We want many more people, in addition to taking environmental preservation seriously, to look at reusable bags and bags as appealing alternatives that they adopt in their daily lives. We want to be part of this process of adopting a more sustainable lifestyle and make these solutions widely available for this purpose.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Thinking that I am contributing to improving people's lives and well-being – both by providing sustainable solutions, and by directly and indirectly being able to help families improve their living conditions and realize dreams and plans.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

I don't know if it's the biggest, but I advise you to dedicate yourself to learning and being flexible on this journey. We may have knowledge and skills linked to the main activity of the business, but learning about business management is very useful. I advise you not to deprive yourself of learning from other people's experiences (which does not necessarily mean doing what other people did) and asking for support when necessary. Fortunately, nowadays we can even learn from people without having direct contact with them, through content shared over the internet.

Why LoA loves it…

We love Arline Ferrão’s story because it is a great example of how, if you are passionate about making a difference to the environment through your business, its starts with creating a solution to a customer need. She is doing just that with her business, Kasunga, manufacturing resuable bags that can be personalized by individuals and companies alike. By putting well-being and sustainability at the heart of her brand, Arline is making a difference to the environment, one reusable bag at a time. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
