Mukundi Lambani, a South African ed-tech innovator improving multilingual learning for children

April 28, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Mukundi Lambani, founder, Ambani Africa (South Africa)

Startup Story

Mukundi Lambani is the founder of Ambani Africa in South Africa, an innovative ed-tech company committed to promoting multilingual education and improving learning outcomes for children. Her journey into producing began in 2010 with the international 48 Hour Film Project. At just 23, she became the first African producer of the competition, organizing film festivals in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Gaborone. This initiative opened doors for over 200 filmmakers, some even making it to Hollywood and Cannes, thanks to Lambani's fundraising efforts. The business was registered in 2018 and started operations in 2020, and now employs 10 people.

Alongside her achievements, Mukundi holds a master’s in creative media leadership from Bournemouth University, a diploma in Business Management and Administration from Varsity College, and an honours degree in Motion Picture Medium from AFDA. Her diverse career includes roles as a content producer, primary school language teacher, and tertiary lecturer. She co-founded the creative advertising agency Brianbow and served as project manager at the Goethe Institute for the Creative Economies in Townships project, supporting emerging creatives in township communities to establish and run their businesses.

LoA spoke to the passion-driven Mukundi Lambani about her business, her passion for creative media, and her business focus on unlocking the power of language for children.

What does your company do?

Ambani Africa is an innovative ed-tech company committed to promoting multilingual education and improving learning outcomes for children. Our mission is to unlock the power of language, empowering children to become confident and successful global citizens. Through our interactive digital content, including AR books, videos, and gaming, we make language learning fun and engaging for children aged 2-9. We also provide valuable tools and resources for parents, teachers, and institutions to support multilingual education in their communities.

“Our mission is to unlock the power of language, empowering children to become confident and successful global citizens.”

What inspired you to start your company?

Mostly a deep-seated desire to address the challenges within the education system. We recognized the importance of narrowing the achievement gap and creating an environment where learning could be enjoyable for all. In South Africa, where only 8% of households speak English at home and with 12 official languages, it was clear that there was a need for educational resources in African languages. We also noticed that many teachers working with young children in early childhood development, lacked the necessary formal training, leading to Grade R students being unprepared for school. I felt inspired to contribute to these efforts by providing support and resources to educators and learners.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Ambani Africa's unique selling proposition is its focus on promoting multilingual education and improving learning outcomes for children in African languages. The company's digital content, including AR books, videos, and gaming, is designed to make language learning fun and engaging for children. Ambani also provides valuable tools and resources for parents, teachers, and institutions to support multilingual education.

“Our collective commitment to our mission drives us to continually push boundaries, inspire creativity, and foster a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.”

Tell us a little about your team:

My team is a dynamic blend of passionate individuals dedicated to empowering children through language learning and cultural appreciation. Each member brings unique expertise and enthusiasm to the table, whether it's in educational content creation, technology development, customer support, or community engagement. Together, we strive to create innovative solutions that make language learning fun, accessible, and impactful for children around the world. Our collective commitment to our mission drives us to continually push boundaries, inspire creativity, and foster a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I come from a creative background, initially starting out as a filmmaker. However, I realized the importance of learning about the business side of things. Through courses and various programs, I gained valuable knowledge. I was also part of a creative agency formed with other business partners, where I further honed my entrepreneurial skills. This experience equipped me well for venturing into entrepreneurship with confidence.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Our future plans for the company involve expanding into more subjects, grades, and languages to create a continuous learning experience within the Ambani world. Our goal is to make learning fun and accessible no matter where you are. We plan to grow our platform, content, and merchandise offerings to become the go-to household name for educational entertainment.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Being an entrepreneur brings me the most satisfaction because of the thrill of turning ideas into reality and the continuous challenge of problem-solving. It's like solving a never-ending puzzle where success is both the destination and the journey. But most importantly, seeing the impact of our work is incredibly fulfilling. When we receive feedback from parents or teachers about children understanding better or enjoying school more because of our work, it reassures me that we're making a positive difference.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

The biggest piece of advice I would give to other women looking to start up is to believe in yourself and your abilities. It's essential to have confidence in your ideas and vision, even when faced with challenges or doubts from others. Trusting in your capabilities and staying resilient through setbacks will help you navigate the journey of entrepreneurship with determination and success.

Additionally, seek out mentors and a supportive network of fellow entrepreneurs who can provide guidance, encouragement, and valuable insights along the way.

Remember, your unique perspective and contributions as a woman in the startup world are incredibly valuable, so embrace your strengths and pursue your dreams with passion and perseverance.

Why LoA loves it…

In life and in business, having the ability to converse in multiple languages is such an advantage, and Mukundi Lambani and her team at Ambani Africa are empowering children to unlock the power of language. They make learning accessible, fun, and entertaining as well as educational. In an increasingly challenging and competitive world, being able to truly empower children through language is equipping them to fulfill their potential and take advantage of opportunities in the future. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
