Beth Malatji - The startup story of a South African publishing entrepreneur passionate about creating great magazine content for others in business

May 9, 2016 Melanie Hawken
Beth Malatji, founder of Wealth Ladder Magazine (South Africa)

Beth Malatji, founder of Wealth Ladder Magazine (South Africa)

As part of their day-to day business development, entrepreneurs need access to great information, insight and advice, and Wealth Ladder Magazine looks to provide all those things and more. Entrepreneur Beth Malatji is creating not just an informative and engaging published resource but she is also creating networking events that bring entrepreneurs together.

LoA found out more about this unique enterprise this month from founder Beth Malatji and heard about her interesting plans for the future and growing her brand.

What does your company do?

Wealth Ladder Magazine is a digital publication (based on iOS & Android) that provides awareness amongst both the young and old around the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship, self-employment, and of their role in shaping their future and that of their country’s economic development. Our publication delivers material straight from the mouths of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs. We often run networking events every 3 months with both local and international speakers. Our networking events are kept small and we are trying to eliminate the awkwardness and anxiety of networking through themed icebreakers making sure every attendee leaves with at least a contact or two.

"Wealth Ladder Magazine is a digital publication (based on iOS & Android) that provides awareness amongst both the young and old around the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship, self-employment, and of their role in shaping their future and that of their country’s economic development."

What inspired you to start your company?

I started Wealth Ladder magazine because I wanted to read a publication I could relate to as an aspiring entrepreneur. It all started from just the curiosity of always wanting to become an entrepreneur and not really knowing where to start, what it takes; and also the fact that I identified that there wasn’t really a publication out there – an entrepreneurial, business publication – that myself, as an aspiring entrepreneur, could relate to. I think there are some really great magazines and they produce great content, but I found it difficult to relate to. I think they go on the assumption that you’ve already started a business; or you already have a business; or you’re an experienced, accomplished entrepreneur; and I found it quite intimidating.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Wealth Ladder magazine is not only an information distributor. It is an inspiring publication. We always strive to create the most professional, quality-driven content we possibly can. Our focus is to provide readers with the most actionable, useful information we can.

"I started Wealth Ladder magazine because I wanted to read a publication I could relate to as an aspiring entrepreneur."

Tell us a little about your team

We work with great guest contributors, and we work almost entirely remotely, with some members an ocean and several time zones away.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I am from an entrepreneurial background. My grandparents used to sell chickens and some kiosk items and I remember looking forward to go visit them over the holidays just so I could run the shop. They used to call me their mini manager and I'd choose running the shop instead of playing with other kids. More than anything, I just loved being in control, counting profits and the thrill of "selling" and helping customers was very hard to explain. Unfortunatunately, the shop closed down because my grandmother went blind and there was really no one to overlook everything as my grandfather had a full time job. The passion was stimulated again when I was a business consultant at my first job. That's when the entrepreneurial bug bit me, indirectly again. I was very passionate to help ambitious entrepreneurs, I wanted to see growth and progress. I wanted entrepreneurs to be well informed.

"It all started from just the curiosity of always wanting to become an entrepreneur and not really knowing where to start, what it takes; and also the fact that I identified that there wasn’t really a publication out there – an entrepreneurial, business publication – that myself, as an aspiring entrepreneur, could relate to."

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

I am currently working on a new TV show for the magazine entirely dedicated to interviewing the doers and rockstars of today's business world.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Connecting entrepreneurs, supplying relevant information and seeing growth from Point A.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Keeping up with what you don't know has the amazing ability to transform what you do know into the next million buck idea. Constant learning is the grease we need to stay competitive.

Why LoA loves it….

At LoA, we have a passion for great content, and we also appreciate just how hard it is to produce that great content 24/7, 365 days a year. So, we celebrate all those women entrepreneurs who embark upon their business ventures in the publishing environment, particularly in the digital space which is an exciting one right now. Beth Malatji is a publishing entrepreneur who has a love of producing great content that can connect powerfully with audiences, giving them great insight on their own entrepreneurial journeys, and we celebrate the passion she has for her work. --- Melanie Hawken, founder and CEO of Lionesses of Africa
