Three Questions to Create Clarity, Confidence and Courage

September 3, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Questions are a conduit to unlocking the resources within you. They are an essential coaching tool because they are a permission device between what someone already knows and what they want to acknowledge. Change happens when a client reaches a new insight, a perspective they never considered previously. However, the insight can only reveal itself when the person is completely honest with themselves.

Happiness is not about positive thinking but creative thinking

August 26, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Your thoughts are the turbines that generate the energy of happiness. Affirmations and positive thinking are 'part of the furniture' of personal growth. You can tell yourself you're terrific, but if you don't inherently believe it, there's always an inner critic inside whispering to you – what a load of rubbish, no you're not. If you can't always rely on positive thinking when you need it most, what if you experimented with creative thinking instead?

Is Your Social Media Habit Getting Worse? This Is My Solution

August 20, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

If you're honest with yourself, how much time do you spend scrolling social media? Your intention is to do an innocent 'quick' check-in, but before you know it, you're well over the thirty-minute mark despite having more urgent tasks. This insight has come up repeatedly when I ask my clients to do a time audit of a typical day. These are not fresh-out-of-college graduates but professionals across all levels and industries.

You make or break your day in the first five minutes of waking up

July 23, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Your alarm goes off at 6 am because you promised to start exercising…again. When you reach over to turn off the alarm, your mind tells you it's cold and dark and you should hit snooze for another ten minutes. What do you do? These next few minutes will determine the trajectory of your day. If you keep your promise to yourself, you generate energy, self-confidence and a deep sense of self-trust.

Personal Growth Is Not About Adding but Editing

July 9, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

What if you approached personal growth like decluttering your wardrobe? If you want to add new items more suitable to your current style, you want to free up space first and let go of the items that no longer serve you or are not aligned with who you are. Instead of reading another personal growth book or attending another workshop, what can you edit out that is no longer aligned with who you are first?

Why you shouldn't believe everything you think and what to do about it

July 1, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Thinking is choice architecture. Laying a foundation of negative and fearful thoughts builds your next levels of emotions, beliefs and actions. Author and Professor John Kabat-Zinn describes thoughts as soap bubbles of the mind. You can choose to attach yourself to the thoughts or see through them and pop them.

The Best Advice Most People Don't Take

June 24, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Think back to the last time you attended a buffet dinner. Despite the array of choices available to you, it's human nature to stick to what you know and probably go back for several helpings of the same thing. Another way to approach a buffet is with curiosity. Wow, why haven't I ever tried this before? Let me take a small portion to try, and who knows, I may even love it.

Three things you do to gain control but leave you more powerless

June 18, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

The more uncertainty in your world, the stronger your desire to control your external environment and those around you. Certainty is a basic human need. There are positive ways to create this sense of structure, security and knowing, such as a morning ritual, prayer, meditation, planning or exercise.

If Time Is Money, Why Don't You Manage It the Same Way?

May 28, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

If you want to make sure you come out on your monthly salary, you plan and budget accordingly. Why not apply the same thinking to your time and create a time budget? Creating a budget for your spending is not a punishment but a way to give you peace of mind. Managing your day should be the same. Your calendar is your budgeting tool - plan your week before you are in it to allocate sufficient funds to the relevant tasks. The last thing you want is to run out of time and then eat into next week's allocation.

What I've learnt about personal growth from my 8-year-old daughter

May 20, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

My daughter came out of her dance class in tears. I assumed one of the girls said something nasty to her, but she assured me it wasn't the case. Eventually, she admitted that she was upset because the class was challenging, and she struggled with the new moves. My children are constantly my greatest teachers; this situation reminded me of how difficult it is to experience challenge and discomfort for the first time.

7 Ways to help create an accountability and ownership mindset

May 14, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

What do you do when someone doesn't do what they committed to? They were due to deliver something, but when you follow up, there's always an excuse or someone else to blame - 'they never replied to my mail, finance is too slow or fill in the blank’. Most people don't say anything, and then the passive-aggressive behaviour begins. When there is no consequence for non-delivery, it becomes culture because, ultimately, silence is permission.

4 Ways to say no without saying no

April 22, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Saying no is challenging; most of us dread it because it questions our identity as being a good person. We fear saying no because we are afraid people won't like us or will let them down and disappoint them. We attach so much guilt and dread to this little word that we end up giving away our yes too quickly.

The Key to Your Self-Care Goals Is Thinking Small and Here’s Why

April 15, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

When making progress on self-care goals, having a good intention is not enough. In my work as a coach and trainer, I know people genuinely have every good intention to show up on the calendar without guilt to make time for their self-care goals. They make promises to themselves, intending to honour them, but ultimately these agreements get broken. The excuses are coming from a good place — my boss needed something, I didn’t have enough time or my bed was too warm.

Most People Think Imposter Syndrome Reveals Your Gaps. The Truth Is It Reveals Your Growth

March 31, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Imposter syndrome is not based on logic. The most successful people still experience the feeling that everyone will find out that they know nothing, that their success is based on luck, and that they don’t deserve to be there. It’s a debilitating pattern and one that can keep you playing small if you buy into your own story.

February 12, 2023 Melanie Hawken

When you receive an email, you have three choices: You can read it immediately, save it for later, or delete it. Although you can’t control the volume of emails you receive, you can choose what to do with each one. There is also a plethora of software available for organising, managing and optimising your inbox.

How to Turn Your Fear Into Fuel

February 5, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Would you ever choose to watch a bad movie twice? Probably not. Yet when it comes to something we dread or even something painful that happened in the past, we replay it repeatedly. Every time you play the movie in your mind, the picture gets brighter, and the sounds more intense. Some of us have been playing the movie for years, preventing us from making progress on what matters most. So what can you do about it?

6 Lessons I Learned in My 40s I’m Grateful I Never Knew in My 20s

January 26, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

I've read many articles about life lessons people wished they had known earlier. Arguably this could have given me a better start, but the truth is had I known what I know now, I wouldn't have experienced the growth and discomfort that has shaped me into who I am today.

4 Habits to Create a Powerful Personal Brand

January 22, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

How do you know if you’re a powerful personal brand? It’s very simple. Are people excited to work with you? What do people expect of you when they engage with you? If you think back to university or college, you were forced to do group projects. There was always that person who did nothing and took the credit. It was easier to do their part because you knew it wouldn’t be done to the standard appropriate for your team. You didn’t say that person was a poor personal brand. However, you did associate them with labels such as unreliable, a taker and lazy.

How to Lead Yourself Through Uncertainty

January 8, 2023 Melanie Hawken

by Lori Milner

Change is inevitable; it's the only constant. The question is, how comfortable are you with feeling uncomfortable? Consider that uncertainty came naturally to you in your twenties; you craved it. Very rarely did you plan your Saturday nights, the spontaneity of not knowing where you would land up was half the fun.
